[10/06/2010] Camera and imaging use
The monopods are used in order to provide support for a camera and hold it steady – this gives the photographer the ability to take pictures at slower shutter speed and use longer focal lenses as well. The monopods are often used by sports photographers, hikers, photographers taking actions shots, nature photographers, and others. They provide less stability than tripods and tablepods, but are much easier to carry and fold quickly as well. At times the monopods are fixed to the belt or the chest of the photographer and serve as an extra support; they can also be leaned against an object or a structure and turned into bipods.
The monopods have a ball head (swivel) on top, which allows the camera to be panned and tilted at different angles. Monopods are usually lightweight since they are made of materials like aluminum or carbon fiber that don’t rust and are quite sturdy; they are also easy to extend and retract and might have safety locks that prevent accidental retraction. Monopods are also used with video cameras since they not only provide stability, but are easier to move around and are ideal for weddings, parties, and other similar events.
